To probe antiquity (探古; the upper character is fanqie 塔南; Kong's commentary on the *Shangshu* states: "*Tan* means to take." The *Shenglei* says it means taking deeply. The *Shuowen* states: "Taking from afar; from hand, phonetic in 穼; 穼 sounds like *mi*").
