根機（既祈反易曰機者動之微也考聲弩牙也說文主發動者謂之機從木幾聲）。

根機 (*gēnjī*, faculties and inclinations; [the second character has] the fanqie 既祈 [*jì* + *qí*]. The *Yijing* says: "*Jī* is the subtle inception of movement." The *Kaosheng* says: "The trigger of a crossbow." The *Shuowen* says: "That which governs triggering is called *jī*; it is composed of 木 with 幾 as phonetic").
