Needle piercing (鍼刺: for the upper character, *zhí* - *rèn* fanqie [*zhēn*]. The *Guangya* says: "A *zhēn* is also an awl/piercer." The *Liji* states: "A wife on her right wears a needle-tube, thread, and floss." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "That with which one sews." The *Yupian* says: "To stitch garments." Popular usage takes the radical 十 as 針, which also conforms to the times and is used provisionally. The standard form takes the radical 金 'metal' with 箴 abbreviated as phonetic. For the lower character, the sound of 刺 is *qīng* - *yì* fanqie [*cì*]; also *cǐ* - *sì* fanqie; both pronunciations are acceptable, and this is the standard form of the character. The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "To wound straight on." Gu Yewang says: "A sharp point entering into human flesh is called *cì*." The *Gu-jin zhengzi* states that it takes the radical 刀 'knife' with 朿 *cì* phonetic; the sound of 朿 is 次 [*cì*]; those written with 朿 are incorrect. The sūtra takes the radical 夹 as 刾, which is a vulgar character).
