Jackals and wolves (豺狼: for the upper character, the sound is 柴 [*chái*]. It is the name of a mountain beast. The *Kuodi zhi* says: "The jackal resembles a dog but is smaller. It prefers to travel in packs. It is a righteous beast, having distinctions of noble and base. The jackal-servants always hunt first to obtain birds, deer, and other animals, but dare not eat them first; they watch and wait for the jackal-master. When the jackal-master arrives later, he eats first. Only after he is sated and abandons the leftover meat do the jackal-servants begin to eat together." The *Yueling* chapter of the *Liji* says: "In the last month of autumn, jackals sacrifice animals." For the lower character, the sound is 郎 [*láng*]. It is a wild beast. In the northern lands and deserts these beasts are very abundant. They always dwell in river valleys and burrows. The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "A wolf resembles a dog, with a sharp head, white forehead, high front, broad rear, erect ears, square mouth, and a tail that always hangs down. It is blue-yellow or white. It is very strong, and donkeys, horses, humans, and domestic animals all suffer harm from it." The *Erya* says: "A male wolf is called a *huān*; a female is called a *láng*; its young is called a *xiào*, and it is extraordinarily strong and swift." It is a phono-semantic character; the sound of 貛 is 歡 [*huān*]).
