黔黎（上儉嚴反杜注左傳云黔黑色史記始皇二十六年更名萬民為黔首從黑今聲下禮奚反周謂萬姓𥠖民或謂之黎庶韻詮云黎眾也從𱥯𥝢聲𥝢音离）。

The common people (黔黎: for the upper character, *jiǎn* - *yán* fanqie [*qián*]. Du's commentary on the *Zuo zhuan* says: "*Qián* means black colour." The *Shiji* says: "In the twenty-sixth year of the First Emperor, the myriad people were renamed the black-headed [黔首]." It takes the radical 黑 'black' with 今 *jīn* phonetic. For the lower character, *lǐ* - *xī* fanqie [*lí*]. Under the Zhou the myriad surnames were called the *lí* people [黎民], or the *lí* multitudes [黎庶]. The *Yunquan* says: "*Lí* means numerous." It takes the radical 𱥯 with 𥝢 *lí* phonetic; the sound of 𥝢 is 离 [*lí*]).
