先哲（下展裂反爾雅云哲智也方言云齊宋之間謂智為哲孔注尚書云哲照了也說文亦智也從口折聲字或作悊亦作喆音義並同）。

Past sages (for the latter [character 哲], zhan + lie fan; the *Erya* says: "*Zhe* means wise"; the *Fangyan* says: "Between Qi and Song, wisdom was called *zhe*"; Kong [Anguo]'s commentary on the *Shangshu* says: "*Zhe* means illuminating clearly"; the *Shuowen* also says: "It means wise; it is formed with 'mouth' (口) and zhe (折) as phonetic"; the character is also written as 悊 or as 喆; their sound and meaning are both the same).
