攘郤（上壤章反韓詩傳云攘除也周禮云却顧野王亦辭也說文從手襄聲下正却字也古文從谷也）。

Repelling and warding off (the former [character 攘] is rang + zhang fan; the commentary on the *Han Poetry* says: "*Rang* means to eliminate"; the *Rites of Zhou* uses 却; Gu Yewang also says it means to decline; the *Shuowen* says: "It is formed with 'hand' (手) and xiang (襄) as phonetic"; the latter is the proper character 却; the ancient script forms it with 'valley' (谷)).
