Sluggish and dull (遲 pronounced 長 + 尼 fanqie. The Commentary on the Mao Shi says: “'Chi' (遲) means slow; it means protracted.” The Kaosheng says: “It means long-lasting; it means halting.” The Shuowen says: “Moving slowly. It derives from the movement radical [辵] with '犀' as phonetic.” 辵 is pronounced 丑 + 略 fanqie. 犀 is pronounced 西; it derives from '尾' (tail) and '牛' (ox). In the sūtra text it is written with '尸' and '羊', which is a popular character. In the Zhou script it is written with '辛' as '遲', or written as '𨒈', which is an ancient character. The lower character [鈍] is pronounced 豚 + 頓 fanqie. The Cang Jie pian says: “'Dun' (鈍) means stubborn and blunt.” The Yunying says: “A blade not sharp.” The Shuowen says: “Derives from [the radical for metal with] '屯' as phonetic.” 屯 is pronounced 徒 + 論 fanqie.)
