Poisoned (the upper character is pronounced 張 + 仲 fanqie. The Yunying says: “'Zhong' (中) means to be struck by; it is a phonetic loan character.” The lower character is pronounced 同 + 篤 fanqie. The Shuowen says: “A plant that harms people, growing here and there; it derives from '屮' [sprout] and '毒'.” 毒 is pronounced 哀 + 改 fanqie; 屮 is pronounced 丑 + 列 fanqie.)
