捶打（上佳蘂反說文云以杖擊也從手垂聲也或從竹作箠箠策也或從木作棰棰棓也下德梗反廣雅打擊也埤蒼棓也古今正字從手丁聲也江外音丁挺反說文闕也）。

Beating and striking (the upper character is pronounced 佳 + 蘂 fanqie. The Shuowen says: “Striking with a stick. It derives from the hand radical with '垂' as phonetic.” Or written with the bamboo radical as '箠'; '箠' is a whip. Or written with the wood radical as '棰'; '棰' is a club. The lower character is pronounced 德 + 梗 fanqie. The Guangya says: “'Da' (打) means to strike.” The Picang says: “A club.” The Gujin zhengzi says: “Derives from the hand radical with '丁' as phonetic.” South of the Yangtze it is pronounced 丁 + 挺 fanqie. It is missing in the Shuowen.)
