Severing and cutting off (the upper character is pronounced 團 + 夘 fanqie. Kong's Commentary on the Shangshu says: “'Duan' (斷) means to sever.” The Shuowen says: “'Duan' also means to cut off. It derives from the axe radical [斤] and '𢇍'; '𢇍' is the ancient character for 'sever' [絕].” In the present sūtra text it has been rearranged as '斷' for convenience and balance. Alternatively written as '[(└@(止/貝))*斤]' or '[直*召]', which are ancient characters; there is also the popular form '斷'. The lower character is pronounced 賤 + 節 fanqie. Zheng's Sub-commentary on the Shi says: “To make even; to make orderly.” The Shuowen says: “Mutual instruction by hand.” Writing it with the earth radical as '截' is a popular form.)
