Mechanism (機關: the first character, ji [記] + yi [宜] fan. The Jixun says: “All things that have a barrier control to set movement in motion are called 機 (jī).” The Shuowen says: “What controls releasing is called 機.” It is formed from wood [木] with 幾 phonetic. The second character, gu [古] + wan [頑] fan. The Da Dai Liji says: “The noble person's feelings are close yet reach far; he examines one thing and it connects with (關) many.” The Shuowen says: “Using wood across to bar a doorway is called 關.” It is formed from gate [門] with 𢇇 phonetic. 𢇇 has the same sound as above. In the sūtra written as 閞, which is incorrect; 閞 is sounded bian [弁], which is not the meaning of the sūtra).
