蚊蝱 (mosquitoes and gadflies; the former is wu/fen fan; written in sūtras as 蚉, which is a vulgar and incorrect form; Shuowen jiezi writes it as 蟁, a flying insect that bites humans; the latter is mo/geng fan; Shenglei says: 'Of the category of mosquitoes and midges, resembling flies but larger'; Shuowen jiezi says: 'Generated by transformation among grasses and flowers of mountains and marshes; also born on the bodies of deer; large ones are called 蝱, while small ones with speckled markings are called [虫*朁]'; [虫*朁] is pronounced zan).
