[Slander and frame] (The first character has the fanqie of 床 [dʑ-] and 咸 [-ɛm]: Mao's commentary on the *Classic of Poetry* says, "'Chán' (讒) means to ruin people with words." The *Shuowen jiezi* says, "'Chán' is like self-accusation; it is formed from 'speech' (言) and two [毚-、], which also serve as phonetic." The component [毚-、] refers to a mottled cunning hare; it is formed from [奐-大+比] and 'hare' (兔). 'Chì' (㲋) has the fanqie of 丑 [tɕʰ-] and 略 [-iɛk]. The second character has the pronunciation of 古 [k-] and 候 [-əu]: Zheng's notes on the *Classic of Poetry* say, "'Gòu' (搆) means to unite." Du's commentary on the *Zuozhuan* says, "'Gòu' means to collude together; it implies transgression and evil." The *Shuowen jiezi* says, "It is formed from 'wood' (木) and the 'gòu' (冓) phonetic." 'Gòu' (冓) is pronounced like 鈎 [kəu]).
