挻埴（上設氈反許注淮南子云挻抑也桂苑珠藂抑土為器曰挻如淳注漢書挻擊也宋忠注太玄經梴和也文字典說文從手延聲從土作埏者非正字也下時力反許慎注淮南子云埴土也孔注尚書云黏土曰埴釋名埴膩土也如脂之膩也說文從土直聲）。

Molding clay (挻埴: the first character has the sound sh- [設] + -ān [氈] fanqie. Xu [Shen]'s commentary on Huainanzi says: '挻 means to press down.' The Guiyuan zhucun says: 'To press down clay to make vessels is called 挻.' Ru Chun's commentary on the Book of Han says: '挻 means to strike.' Song Zhong's commentary on the Taixuanjing says: '挻 means to blend.' The Wenzidian says: 'The Shuowen has it formed with the hand radical (手) and yán (延) as phonetic; writing it with the earth radical as 埏 is not the standard character form.' The second character has the sound sh- [時] + -ì [力] fanqie. Xu Shen's commentary on Huainanzi says: '埴 means clay.' Kong's commentary on the Book of Documents says: 'Sticky clay is called 埴.' The Shiming says: '埴 means greasy clay, smooth like fat.' The Shuowen says: 'Formed with the earth radical (土) and zhí (直) as phonetic').
