Pendant tassels of a ceremonial cap (冕旒: the upper character [冕] has the fanqie phonetic [mian] (眉辯反); it has already been explained in the preface of the preceding fascicle. The lower character [旒] has the fanqie phonetic [liu] (柳舟反). The Mao Commentary to the Book of Songs states: "旒 denotes decorative display." The Da Dai Liji states: "Wearing a ceremonial cap with front pendant tassels is that by which sight is obstructed." The Shuowen jiezi writes it as 𤩰: "The hanging jade pendants of a ceremonial cap; derived from the jade radical (玉) with the phonetic marker [liu] (流)." The scripture text writes it as 旒, which refers to the pendant streamers of banners and flags).
