Boars and ape-monsters (豭玃) (The first character has the fanqie jia + ya. The Guangya says: “Jia (豭) is a male pig.” The Shuowen says: “A boar; it is formed from the ‘pig’ classifier and the phonetic jia (叚).” In the sūtra it is written with the ‘dog’ classifier as 猳, which is also acceptable. The second character has the fanqie ju + yue. The Kaosheng says: “The jue (玃) resembles a monkey, but its hands and feet are long.” Guo’s commentary on the Erya says: “It resembles a macaque but is large and dark grey-black, able to seize and hold humans, and fond of looking back.” The Shuowen says: “A large female ape; it is formed from the ‘dog’ classifier and the phonetic jue (矍).” Other editions of the sūtra have ‘toad’ (蝦蟆), which is incorrect).
