巢窟 ('nests and dens'; the upper character is pronounced 仕 [shì] + 爻 [yáo] fanqie. Zheng's commentary on the Kaogong ji says: '巢 [cháo] is like high.' The Shuowen says: 'A bird's abode in a tree is called 巢 [cháo]; in a cave, it is called 窠 [kē]. It is composed of 木 ["wood"] and is a pictographic character.' The lower character is pronounced 困 [kùn] + 骨 [gǔ] fanqie. Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'A 窟 [kū] is an underground chamber.' The Liji says: 'In winter they dwelt in earthen caves [營窟],' which is this. The Shenglei says: 'A 窟 [kū] is where hares hide.' The Shuowen has it composed of 穴 ['hole'] with 屈 as phonetic).
