隍壍（上穫光反爾雅云隍虛也蒼頡篇云隍城下坑也說文城池有水曰池無水曰隍也從𨸏皇聲𨸏音附也下妾艷反顧野王云塹今謂城池也周書云無渠壍而守之字書亦謂城隍也說文塹坑也從土斬聲經從漸作壍亦通）。

Moats and trenches (隍壍; the first character is *huo* + *guang* [huáng]; the *Erya* says: "隍 means an empty trench." The *Cangjiepian* says: "隍 is the ditch beneath a city wall." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "A city ditch with water is called a pond (池); without water it is called a dry moat (隍); it has the mound radical and the *huáng* sound; 𨸏 is pronounced *fù*." The second is *qie* + *yan* [qiàn]; Gu Yewang says: "塹 nowadays refers to city moats; the *Zhoushu* says: 'Holding out without ditches or moats'; the character dictionary also calls them city moats." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "塹 is a pit; it has the earth radical and the *zhǎn* sound; the sūtra writes it with 漸 as 壍, which is also acceptable").
