聾聵（上祿東反左傳云耳不聽五聲之和為聾蒼頡篇云聾謂耳不聞也說文亦無聞也從耳龍聲下頑恠反國語云聾聵不可使聽也賈注云生聾曰聵文字典說從耳貴聲也）。

聾聵 (deaf and dull of hearing; the first character is 祿東反; the Zuo zhuan states, 'When the ear does not hear the harmony of the five tones, that is 聾 (deafness)'; the Cang Jie Pian states that 聾 means the ears cannot hear; the Shuowen jiezi also states that it means not hearing; it takes the 'ear' (耳) radical with 龍 as phonetic; the second character is 頑恠反; the Guoyu states, 'The deaf and the dull of hearing cannot be made to listen'; Jia [Kui's] commentary states that being born deaf is called 聵; the Wenzidian shuo states that it takes the 'ear' (耳) radical with 貴 as phonetic).
