The Erya states: 'Those with four legs and hair are called beasts (獸).' The Cang Jie pian states: 'Beasts (獸) are those that run.' The Guangya states: '獸 (shou) means to guard (守).' The sūtra text writes it with 犬 as 狩. Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli states: 'Hunting in winter is called 狩 (shou).' Guo's commentary on the Erya states: 'Setting fires to burn grass is also called 狩 (shou)'; this is not the meaning intended in the sūtra.
