慙愧（雜甘反尚書云惟有慙德說文慙亦愧也從心斬聲或作慚慚音𧑯感反非經義也）。

慙愧 [Ashamed and remorseful]: Fanqie 雜 (za) + 甘 (gan) [MC: *dzɑm]. The Shangshu states: 'He felt remorseful in his heart.' The Shuowen jiezi states: '慙 (can) also means to feel ashamed. Formed from 心 (mind/heart) with the phonetic 斬 (zhan).' It is sometimes written as 慚; 慚 has the sound 𧑯 (chan) + 感 (gan), which is not the sūtra's meaning.
