惸惸（葵營反孔注尚書曰[惸-子+(首-目+ㄎ)]單也謂無兄弟曰[惸-子+(首-目+ㄎ)]也無子曰獨字書云焭焭無所依是也或從耳作煢文字典說云惸字從𠔃從子作惸誤也）。

惸惸 [Desolate and alone]: Fanqie 葵 (kui) + 營 (ying) [MC: *gĭwæŋ]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu states: '惸 means solitary. One without brothers is called 惸; one without children is called 獨.' The Zishu states: '焭焭 (qiongqiong) means having no one to rely on.' It is sometimes written with 耳 as 煢. The Wenzi dian说 states: 'The character 惸 is formed from 𠔃; writing it with 子 as 惸 is erroneous.'
