從燧 [By means of a fire-drill / burning-mirror]: Pronounced 遂 (sui) [MC: *zwiH]. Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan states: 'A 燧 (sui) is that by which fire is obtained.' Xu Shuzhong's commentary on the Huainanzi states: 'A 燧 is made of the refined copper of five stones; circular, held facing the sun, one obtains fire.' The Kaosheng states: 'A 燧 is what is now called a fire-mirror. Round and about two inches across, all have a decorated surface and a concave center; facing the sun and holding mugwort tinder beneath it, one promptly catches fire.' The Wenzi dianshuo states: 'Formed from 火 (fire) with the phonetic 遂 (sui).' The Shuowen jiezi notes it is sometimes written with 金 as 鐆; the Kaosheng notes it is sometimes written with 車 as 䡵. 窊 is fanqie 烏 (wu) + 蝸 (gua) [MC: *ʔwa].
