Awned barley (kuangmai; the upper character is guo-meng fan. The Zitong says: "There are a hundred names of grains, but in summary they reduce to five: those of the millet class are called headed grains; those of the bean class are called podded grains; those of the wheat and barley class are called awned grains; those of the hemp class are called tree grains." Upon examination, awned barley is an awned grain. The Kaosheng says: "Kuang is grain that has awns." The Shuowen jiezi states: "It takes the grain classifier and guang as phonetic; the orthodox form is kuang (穬)." The sūtra text takes the wheat classifier and is written as [麩-夫+廣], which is barley. The Kaosheng also says: "It is barley." Various dictionaries do not have this character).
