The Baihu tong says: "Clothing (yi) means concealment (yin); it conceals the shape of the body." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Clothing means reliance. The upper is called yi; the lower is called chang. It takes the ru classifier, depicting the covering of two people's forms." In clerical script it is written as 衣, which is an error and abbreviation. The lower character is yi-yi fan.
