Dense forest [稠林]: the first [character is pronounced with the fanqie] zhi-liu (直留反). The Boya states: 'Chóu (稠) means dense (穊).' The Mao Commentary on the Shijing states: 'Chóu means crowded.' The Shuowen [jiezi] states: 'Numerous.' It is formed from [the semantic component] hé (禾, grain) and [the phonetic component] zhōu (周).
