黔黎（上儉廉反鄭氏注禮記黔首也說文從黑今聲下力奚反孔注尚書𥠖眾也古今正字從黍刀刀音利聲）。

Common populace (黔黎: the first character has the fanqie [jian] + [lian]. Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: 'The black-headed [commoners].' The Shuowen says: 'It derives from 黑 [black] with 今 [jīn] phonetic.' The second character has the fanqie [li] + [xi]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '黎 [lí] means the masses.' The Gujin zhengzi says: 'It derives from 黍 [millet] and 刀 [knife]; 刀 has the phonetic sound of 利 [lì].').
