[Three wretched destinies] (Also written in the two forms 途 and 𨑒, the same; the fanqie is 達 + 胡 [tú]. As for the "three *tu*, " in worldly books, the Chunqiu mentions the perilous and hazardous place called Santu ("Three Roads"), and this term was borrowed for the name; *tu* is like "path" (道), not meaning "mud and ashes" (塗炭). If one follows the Sanskrit text, it is called *apāyagati* (阿波那伽低), which is translated here as "evil destinies" (惡趣), not "evil paths" (惡道). "Path" has the meaning of cause, because one treads and walks along it; "destiny" is the name of the result, the place already reached, which is why it is not properly called "evil paths").
