(First, in the fourth year of the Baoding era [564 CE], a jiashen year, of Emperor Wu of the Yuwen family of the Northern Zhou, the Tripiṭaka Master Jñānayaśas translated the Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya-dhāraṇī along with its Method of Contemplative Recitation and Efficacy in one fascicle of five sheets at the Four Heavenly Kings Monastery in the old city of Chang'an, with Scholar Bao Yong taking down the text. Seen recorded in the Kaihuang Sanbao lu as the first translation. Later, in the first year of the Yifeng era [676 CE] of Emperor Tianhuang of the Great Tang, the Brahmin monk Buddhapāli arrived at Mount Wutai to pay homage to the Great Sage, and saw a transformation body of Mañjuśrī who instructed him to return to the Western countries to obtain the Sanskrit text of the Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya-sūtra. In the fourth year of the Yifeng era [679 CE], a yimao year, having obtained the sūtra in the Western countries, he returned to Chang'an, presented a memorial, and explained the matter in full. An imperial decree requested Tripiṭaka Master Divākara to translate the Sanskrit sūtra in the palace, with Du Xingyi, director of the Court for Diplomatic Reception, taking down the text, making seven sheets; this was the second translation. Characters tabooed under imperial temple names and national taboos were avoided and not written, and an imperial decree retained the Sanskrit palm-leaf manuscript inside the palace without allowing it out. Divākara therefore made a copy for himself. The Sanskrit monk was gifted thirty bolts of silk; Buddhapāli did not accept the silk, but instead requested the Sanskrit palm-leaves, and an imperial decree ordered them returned and handed over to him).
