嚴潔（上儼杴反說文教命急也從吅吅音喧𠪚聲𠪚音岌今反又音讖吟反下潔音結鄭注禮記云潔清也謚法曰不行不義曰潔禮記又云靜也精微也從水絜聲音同上經文有作嚴毅非也字書云煞敵曰果致果曰毅興經義全乖故不取也）。

嚴潔 [Solemn and pure] (The fanqie of the upper character is 儼 + 杴 [yán]. The Shuowen says: "Instructional commands being urgent; formed from 吅 (pronounced xuān) with 𠪚 as phonetic." The fanqie of 𠪚 is 岌 + 今 [yán], and also pronounced with the fanqie 讖 + 吟 [qīn]. The lower character 潔 is pronounced 結 [jié]. Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: "潔 means pure." The Posthumous Titles (Shifa) says: "Not practicing what is unrighteous is called 潔." The Liji also says: "Tranquil, subtle." Formed from 水 (water) with 絜 as phonetic; the pronunciation is the same as above. The sūtra text has a variant reading of 嚴毅, which is incorrect. Character books say: "Killing the enemy is called resolute (果); carrying out resoluteness is called firm (毅)." This completely contradicts the sūtra's meaning, so it is not adopted).
