繼嗣（上雞詣反王逸注周易繼謂不絕也賈注國語云繼餘也尒雅紹也說文續也從糸㡭聲㡭音同上經文從[└@米]作継俗字也無來處草書誤也說文㡭及字書古文㡭字也繼音絕也斷字等從絕並會意字也下詞字反孔注尚書云嗣繼也鄭箋詩云嗣續也詩傳又云嗣習也說文諸侯嗣國也從口從冊司聲也古文從子作孠冊音策也）。

繼嗣 (The upper character has the fanqie [雞+詣]. Wang Yi's commentary to the Zhouyi says: "繼 means not terminating." Jia's commentary to the Guoyu says: "繼 means remainder." The Erya says: "To succeed." The Shuowen says: "To continue; from 糸 with 㡭 phonetic." 㡭 has the same pronunciation as above. The scripture text has it from [└@米] as 継, which is a popular character with no origin, a cursive script error. In the Shuowen and character dictionaries, 㡭 is the ancient form of the character 㡭. 繼 is pronounced [絕]. Characters such as 斷 are composed from 絕, all being ideogrammic compounds. The lower character has the fanqie [詞+字]. Kong's commentary to the Shangshu says: "嗣 means to succeed." Zheng's commentary to the Shi says: "嗣 means to continue." The Shi commentary also says: "嗣 means to practice." The Shuowen says: "The feudal lords inheriting their states; from 口 and 冊 with 司 phonetic." The ancient graph takes 子 as 孠. 冊 is pronounced 策.)
