蘭香梢（所交反字書云蒭草末也玉篇顧氏云木末也今經言蘭香梢者取其梢頭花分為喻也古譯云阿梨樹枝是此句梵漢訛略不分明也彼國元無阿梨樹）。

The tips of fragrant basil 蘭香梢 (the last character is fanqie: 所交 [s- + -ao]; dictionaries state: 'The tip of fodder grass.' Mr. Gu in the Yupian states: 'The tip of a tree.' The 'tips of fragrant basil' mentioned in the present sūtra takes the flowers at the end of the tips as a metaphor. The ancient translation renders it 'branches of the āli tree', which is an unclear corruption and abbreviation of the Sanskrit and Chinese here; originally there was no 'āli tree' in that country [India]).
