蜈蚣 (The upper character has the sound 吳 [wú]; the lower character has the sound 公 [gōng]. The Bencao says: "The centipede is a venomous creature that can consume all kinds of snakes and slay ghosts and ancient demons. It occurs in Jiangnan, though it is found everywhere, breeding in decaying piles of vegetation. By nature it can subdue snakes: it climbs straight onto the snake's back and bites its brain. Those with red heads and red legs are the best; those with yellow legs are useless. If it bites a human, applying mulberry juice mixed with white salt will heal it immediately." The Guangya says: "The jiju is the centipede; the large ones are five or six inches long, with more than a hundred legs." In standard ancient and modern writing, both are phono-semantic graphs with 虫.)
