Famine (饑饉: the upper character is pronounced 機; the lower character is pronounced 近. The Guangya states: ‘When the grain does not ripen, it is called jī; nowadays it is sometimes written 飢.’ Guo's commentary to the Erya states: ‘All wild herbs and vegetables that can be eaten are generically called shū [greens].’ Mao’s commentary to the Shijing states: ‘When greens do not ripen, it is called jǐn.’ The Guliang zhuan states: ‘When the three grains do not grow, it is called jǐn.’ Both characters are phono-semantic.)
