Snakes and scorpions (蛇蠍: the upper character has the fanqie [ɕ- + -a] 社遮; the lower character has the fanqie [x- + -at] 軒謁; both are standard character forms. The Guangya states: ‘Dubo, shàilìn, guīzhé, and chīchài are scorpions.’ Dubo and those following are all variant names for the scorpion. The Fangyan states: ‘From east of the Pass to west of the Pass, between Qin and Jin, it is called shàilìn, or it is called xiē.’ We observe that xiē is the universally used term across the four regions. The character 䖯 is the ancient form of the character dú [poison]; [虫*束*頁] has the pronunciation dà, 𱿴 has the fanqie [l- + -in] 藺怚, 蜇 has the fanqie [ʈ- + -iet] 知列, and 蚳蠆 has the fanqie [tɕʰ- + -ai] 勑芥.)
