白鸖 (White crane: The fanqie 何各 [hè]. The sūtra text writes 鵠, which is an error. 鵠 has the fanqie 胡木 [hú]. It is greyish-yellow with a short beak and found everywhere. The Shuowen says: "A honghu (swan)." The Yupian says: "The yellow swan is shaped like a crane, greyish-yellow in colour, thus we know it is not a crane." The crane is white in colour with a long beak; those living to a thousand years all have a vermilion crown. The Zishu says: "The crane resembles a swan but has a long beak; it is a bird of the divine immortals. Its appearance portends auspicious omens." The Baopuzi says: "The crane cries in the nine marshes, its sound heard in the heavens." The Huainanzi says: "The rooster knows the coming of dawn, the crane knows midnight"; this is it. The Shuowen says: "It takes its semantic element from 鳥 (bird) and 隺 (fanqie 何各) for its sound." The Shuowen further explains that the character 隺 takes its semantic element from 冂 (fanqie 癸營) and from 隹 (隹 is a bird); the bird flies high up towards the summit, seeking to emerge from 冂).
