鵾鳳 (Kun-phoenix: The lower character has the fanqie 房諷 [fèng]. The Mao Shi Yishu says: "The male is called feng; the female is called huang. It perches on nothing but the wutong tree, and feeds on nothing but bamboo seeds." The Classic of Mountains and Seas says: "On Mount Danxue there is a bird shaped like a crane, five-coloured and patterned, named the fenghuang." The Guangya says: "The fenghuang has the head of a chicken, the chin of a swallow, the neck of a snake, the torso of a wild goose, the tail of a fish, and paired wings; it has markings in five places: the markings on the head signify virtue; on the wings, compliance; on the back, righteousness; on the belly, integrity; on the breast, benevolence. When the male calls, it sounds like jiejie; when the female calls, it sounds like zuzu. At dusk it calls 'moon firmly constant'; at dawn it calls 'dispelling brightness'; by day it calls 'preserving longevity'; soaring it calls 'ascending flight'; roosting it calls 'returning prosperity'. When it is seen, the world is at peace." The Shuowen says: "A divine bird, originating in the eastern land of noble persons; it takes its semantic element from 鳥 (bird) and has 凡 for its sound").
