重擔（上直勇反又音除用反二音竝通下躭濫反廣雅擔負也考聲以木荷物曰擔說文手舉物也從扌詹聲也經有從木作檐檐音閻舍檐字也）。

重擔 (The first character has the fanqie: 直勇, and also the fanqie: 除用; both sounds are acceptable. The second character has the fanqie: 躭濫. The Guangya says: "Dan (擔) means to carry on the back." The Kaosheng says: "Carrying things with a wooden pole is called dan." The Shuowen says: "Lifting an object with the hand; it takes the hand radical with the phonetic zhan (詹)." In the sūtra there are versions written with the wood radical as 檐; 檐 has the sound of yan (閻), which is the character for the eaves of a house).
