Able to hear [能聽] (the upper character is nai + deng fan [neng]. The Guangya says: 'Neng means capable.' Zheng's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: 'Having much talent and skill.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A bear-like beast, of the bear family.' The Zuo zhuan says: 'A yellow neng,' where neng is pronounced nai + lai fan [nai], which is this beast. Because this beast is solid within and possesses much strength, people with talent and skill are called worthy and able (xian-neng). The Shuowen jiezi says: it takes the 'flesh' radical, two 'bi' radicals, and tai phonetic. The lower character is ti + jin fan [ting]. The Book of Documents, on the five activities, states: 'The fourth is listening.' Kong says: 'To discern right and wrong.' The Rites of Zhou states that with the five auditions lawsuits are heard to seek out the condition of the people; that is, form, facial expression, breath, ears, and eyes—these are the five auditions. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Ting means to listen; it takes the de radical, pronounced de, the 'ear' radical, and ren, which is also phonetic.' In the sūtra it is written as 聽, which is a popular graph.)
