Blind and dark [盲冥] (mo + bing fan [ming]. The Kaosheng says: 'Gloomy and dark.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'The character ming takes 'sun', 'cover' (mi), and 'six'; cover is pronounced mi. In counting days, on the sixteenth day of the tenth month the moon first begins to wane and gradually becomes obscure and dark, hence it takes 'moon' and 'six'.' Guo Jingchun says: 'Ming means dim.' In sūtras it is mostly written with ju under the mian radical as 𡨋, which is incorrect. The character 𡨋 has already been fully explained in the eighth fascicle of the previous sūtra.)
