如燎（遼銚遼鳥二反竝通周禮曰墳燭庭燎鄭眾曰以麻為燭也鄭玄云墳猶大也樹大燭於門外曰大燭門內曰庭燎皆所照眾為明也集訓云燔柴祭天也說文云放火也從火尞聲也尞字從火從昚昚音慎古慎字）。

Like a torch (如燎: both fanqie liao [遼] + diao [銚] and liao [遼] + niao [鳥] are used. The Zhouli mentions: “Large torches and courtyard flares (庭燎).” Zheng Zhong says: “Making torches from hemp.” Zheng Xuan says: “Fén (墳) is like ‘large.’ Setting up a great torch outside the gate is called a large torch; inside the gate it is called a courtyard flare; both shine on many people to provide light.” The Jixun says: “Burning firewood to sacrifice to Heaven.” The Shuowen says: “To set fire to; formed from fire [火] with 尞 phonetic.” The character 尞 is formed from fire [火] and from 昚; 昚 has the sound shen [慎], an ancient character for 慎).
