憐愍（上禮顛反郭注尒訓云哀愍也下音旻殞反何注公羊愍傷也廣雅愍愛也說文愍痛也從心敃聲也敃字從支民聲敃音上同）。

Pity and compassion (憐愍: the upper character has the fanqie lǐ + diān [lián]; Guo's commentary on the Erya says: 'To pity and grieve for'. The lower character has the fanqie mín + yǔn [mǐn]; He's commentary on the Gongyang says: 'To grieve and be wounded'; Guangya says: 'Mǐn means love'; Shuowen jiezi says: 'Mǐn means sorrow; derived from 心 "heart" with 敃 phonetic'; the character 敃 derives from 支 with 民 phonetic; 敃 has the same sound as above).
