鐵臼 "Iron mortar" (The first character is pronounced tian-jie [tie]. The Shuowen jiezi says: "Black metal; formed from 金 'metal' with 𢧜 as phonetic." 𢧜 is pronounced tian-li. In scripture texts it often follows 截, a vulgar character. The second character is pronounced qiu-you [jiu]. The Shuowen jiezi says: "In ancient times, digging the ground served as a mortar. Later it was made by hollowing out wood and stone; the dot in the middle depicts rice, and the bottom completely depicts the mortar having a base." In the scripture it is written 臼, which is incorrect; 臼 is pronounced gong-liu, picturing two hands).
