紫礦 "Lac (lacca)" (Pronounced guo-meng [kuang]. It is made by boiling and refining the dung of insects that eat sappanwood leaves, along with the tree bark; the liquid is red like sappanwood juice, and when Hu rouge is dyed with it, the residue becomes lac (purple ore). When burned with fire, it is like beeswax, and its sticky unctuousness can also serve as glue to bind inlaid jewels. The lac of the Five Indias differs from this: it is taken from the bark and tender branches of the palāśa tree, thoroughly pounded, decocted, and pressed for its juice, which is used to dye leather and fine cotton cloth a very bright and brilliant red; the residue becomes lac, superior to what was described previously. It is also called the gum of the kiṃśuka tree. 膠 is pronounced jiao; 滓 is pronounced zi-shi [zi]; 嬾 is pronounced nu-dun; 黏 is pronounced ni-lian).
