Cracked and split (皴劈: the first [character] is *tsh(i)* + *ts(un)* in fanqie. The Picang says: '皴 means 皵 (chapped).' The Kaosheng says: 'Cracked by cold; derived from 皮 with 夋 phonetic.' 夋, according to the Shuowen, is pronounced *tsh(i)* + *s(yun)* in fanqie; 皵 is pronounced *tsh(i)* + *l(yak)* in fanqie. The second [character], 劈, is pronounced *ph(it)* + *y(ik)* in fanqie. The Guangya says: '劈 means to split.' The Shuowen says: '劈 means to break open; derived from 刀 with 辟 phonetic.' Ancient script writes it as [后*(乏-之+爪)].)
