怯懼（上欠業反說文從犬作㹤畏劣也犬多畏故從犬去聲從心作怯下瞿羽反左傳畏也廣雅憂也說文恐從心瞿聲）。

Timid and fearful (怯懼: the first [character] is *kh(yam)* + *ng(yap)* in fanqie. The Shuowen writes it with the dog radical as 㹤: 'Cowardly and inferior; dogs are often fearful, hence it is derived from 犬 with 去 phonetic.' Written with the mind radical, it is 怯. The second [character] is *g(yu)* + *'(u)* in fanqie. The Zuozhuan says: 'Fear.' The Guangya says: 'Worry.' The Shuowen says: 'Terror; derived from 心 with 瞿 phonetic.')
