The Wojiao Sea (沃焦海: the first [character] is pronounced *wù*; a vulgar character, standardly written 𣵽. The Kaosheng says: '𣵽 means moistening; approaching.' The Shuowen says: 'To irrigate; derived from 水 with 夭 phonetic.' What the sūtra calls 'Wojiao' is the name of a mountain. Mr. Guo's Xuanzhong ji says: 'The most powerful place in the world is the Wojiao of the Eastern Sea, three hundred li square; ocean waters pouring into it are instantly consumed, which is why the waters flow eastward without overflowing.' The Yiwu zhi says: 'In Jiancheng of Yuzhang there are stones of a yellowish-white color with a coarse grain; when water is poured over them, they immediately become hot like a cauldron, and food can be cooked on them to doneness. There is tangible proof of this.' The Lishi apidong lun says: 'Furthermore, what is the cause therein that the water in the great ocean is scorched and dried up? Monks, when the kalpa first unfolds, the great Anabhila wind picks up and moves the palaces and walled cities of the six suns, placing them down beneath the waters of that great ocean, and the waters of that great ocean are completely consumed and never overflow, because the palaces of those six sun devas are hot.' The Shanhai jing also says: 'At the Valley of the Sun, on the Fusang tree, is where the ten suns bathe; nine are on the lower branches, and one is on the upper branch.' This is it.)
