Orphaned and solitary (孤惸: the first [character] is *k(u)* + *h(u)* in fanqie. The Kaosheng says: 'Alone and solitary.' The Shuowen says: 'One without a father is called 孤; derived from 子 with 瓜 abbreviated phonetic.' The second [character] is *g(wi)* + *l(aw)* in fanqie. The Kaosheng says: 'Solitary.' The Wenzi dianshuo says: 'One without brothers is called 惸.' It is sometimes written with 𠔃 as [惸-子+(首-目+ㄎ)]. The Shuowen standardly writes it as [勞-力+平], derived from 平 with 營 abbreviated; it is also written with the person radical as [鐒-力+(夾-人+十)]. Their definitions and readings are all identical.)
