General outline (梗槩: the first character is pronounced [耕 + 杏] g-ěng [gěng]. The Erya says: "梗 (geng) means upright." The Guangya says: "A brief needle (zhen). It derives from 木 with 更 as phonetic." The second character is pronounced [哥 + 礙] g-ài [gài]. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Liji says: "To level a peck or bushel measure." Xue Cong's commentary on the 'Dongjing fu' says: "梗槩 (genggai) means not fine and dense." The Shuowen agrees with Zheng Xuan; it derives from 木 with 既 as phonetic, or is written 概. 箴 is pronounced 針 [zhēn]; 纖 is pronounced [息 + 尖] x-iān [xiān]).
